Effy is all for more pure entertainment in professional wrestling.
The independent wrestling star recently appeared on ‘Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette’ with special guest host, WWE Hall of Famer Lita. After Effy spoke about working with Gainesville-based FEST Wrestling and the punk rock vibe they add to the wrestling scene, the pair talked about how wrestling and performing goes hand-in-hand with entertainment. Effy then discussed potentially having more drag and burlesque performers in wrestling to break up the usual technical match after technical match layout that most promotions use.
“I want more burlesque and more drag in wrestling. We talked a little about Pollo Del Mar and I was like ‘please come to my show in Florida, you’re incredible’ and seeing how much she brought of herself to the show but it never took away from her job as an announcer and an emcee. The importance was always still on she’s so amazed by these performers and so excited to be announcing them. The audience feels that energy and instead of wrestling which has always been announced by a white man, clean-shaven, in a suit in the middle of the ring, maybe one time a woman can do it. The best person to get our crowd wild and ready for us is a beautiful, entertaining drag queen who’s here to get people excited and the amount of compliments she was getting from other wrestlers and other shows that are very heteronormative things, I think really inspired her too and I think that’s the position I want to be in, is like, if you’re good at the job, I want you in here.
“We need more drag and burlesque and these outside performers who breakup the stagnation of like nine, 20-minute matches in a row…like how many Fujiwara’s can I watch? I don’t know and people demand authenticity these days and we’ve all been through enough B.S. and we’re all a little more apathetic than we were a few years ago and if we don’t feel authenticity, we move on. I’ve felt that from a lot of people, not just in wrestling. So, we have a responsibility now that if we want to grow and keep making money and keep being entertainers, we need to give the show but also kind of come with an honest face of what we’re doing. People don’t wanna be schemed—they wanna be worked but they don’t wanna be schemed—and there’s a difference there, you’re allowed to be authentic but still be a performer.”
