Shawn Michaels Reveals There Was An ‘Out Clause’ In Undertaker Retirement Storyline

Shawn Michaels had a beautiful sendoff upon his retirement from WWE back in 2010. In a rematch from one of the greatest WrestleMania matches in history the year before, Michaels faced The Undertaker in the main event of WrestleMania 26. The show went down from the University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, back on March 28 of 2010.

The stipulation of the match was, if Michaels lost, he would be forced to retire. Of course, Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak was on the line as well. When it was all said and done, “The Deadman” left Arizona victorious, meaning Michaels’ career was over.

However, in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Michaels revealed there was actually an “out clause” in case “HBK” decided he didn’t want to retire after all:

I don’t know that I ever completely decided that it was going to be it [for my career] until after that match was over. We had always sort of discussed sort of an ‘out clause,’ so to speak, if I had the desire to do it again.

But I can remember myself, and ‘Taker, and Michaels Hayes just sitting there after the match, like we had done the year before, just the three of us, sort of sitting there, alone, taking it in, and I said, ‘You know something, guys? I feel good with that.’
